Microwave gone crazy

GE 700w microwave JES735, purchased around 2003. Reasonably good service
until this week.

I close the door, it starts itself (fan, lite come on) with nothing
on the timer. Sometimes it shuts itself down immediatly, sometimes I
have to open the door to stop it.

Sometimes I set the timer, start it, and it runs without counting the
time down. Sometimes I set the timer, start it, and it runs for a fraction
of a second and shuts down. Works OK maybe 1 of 5 tries.

I search the GE Appliances Knowledge Base for JES735, get "No results Found".
But I already knew it was the last GE I'd ever own.

Any idea idea what is wrong with it? Got to be some kind of control module,
I 'spect.

Thx,
Puddin'

Probably one of the door micro switches has failed. They commonly fail
with cracked cases caused by slamming the door.

Naw... Since it only works with the door closed, the switches are
probablyi OK. The timer unit has failed, that is obvious. Unless the
OP can find a replacement that is cheap, probably not worth fixing or
messing with.

After re-reading the post, I agree with you ! I completely missed the
paragraph about the timer.

I shall stand in the corner and repeat 100 times "Look before you

<g>! I suppose the OP could bypass the original timer, and add a
mechanical timer in its place. Not sure I'd want to be around it when
that happens however.

GE refrigerator, 10 years old. The door seals started disintegrating at 6
years. The outside U shaped cover for the magnetic strip on the door just
fell apart, leaving the magnetic strip dangling. I'm replacing the whole
refrigerator this weekend. 5 year old GE dishwasher, used about twice a
week, has failed twice.
GE microwave, less than two years old, has started this loud growl when you
use it. Probably loose plates in the transformer, or something else.
I will never buy another GE product in my life. Ever.

I went through two of them recently, both times the growl was arcing
in the feed. Started out as a quiet growl and then got louder and
louder, until...

Upon disassembly, the damage to the feed was very obvious burning.
Also, both units were under warranty for removable parts. Oh, GE made
these parts tack welded in, so they were no longer removable and
therefore not under warranty.

The door switch is indeed part of the problem.

Near as I can tell, the door latch was designed to eventually
beat the switch to death. I added some cushioning insulation
and baby the damned thing. Works ~70% of the time.

Timer hasn't acted up for a while. Not sure what all caused
that problem last week.
