Metal Halide Lighting

I'm after a metal halide light enclosure, for use on a reef aquarium. I'm
told they are identical to those sometimes used in interior commercial
lighting, so if someone knows of a factory or 2nd hand outlet where I could
pick one up at a cheap price, that'd be great!

For an idea of what I'm talking about:

http://www.sla.net.au/products/interior_commercial/astral.htm

I'm really just looking to see if I can source a cheaper unit.

Thanks all!

I am selling one at the moment, an Arcadia 3x 250W + 2x 9W actinic. Looking
for $1000- ONO, sold originally for about $3000-. Comes with black wooden
stand, suits 6" tank.

Thanks for the offer, I'm after considerably less then that, power wise, so
unless that's three seperate units of 250w, and you are willing to split,
sorry :(

It's a great bargain though, if only I had a 6ft tank :)

What sort of wattage are you after? I've got a spare 150w round MH with
control gear, email me if you're interested.

Hit the police auctions. The sell the units confiscated from the dope
growers.

Yea I noticed lots of 'DIY' guides for metal halides for growing drugs,
rather than reef tanks on my journey!

How do I go to a police auction? Is there a site with information?

go to www.aquariumproducts.com.au and check out their price guide. I was
there recently and they sell the Aqua Pro light at awsomely cheap prices. I
just payed $500 for an Aquapro 1250A (4 foot, 2x fluro 1x150watt halide)
from a different shop, later I found these guys at the link above, and they
sell the same for $350.

Not sure if this helps, but places like Bunnings sell 150-500 watt halide
setups from $40, if you get one, you would have to get the correct bulb for
the setup you are going to use it on.

I think you might be confusing tungsten halogen lights with metal halide -
they're quite different, and I've never seen Bunnings selling the latter.
I've seen 70 and 150w metal halide "shoplighters" at electrical wholesalers
on sale for $140 - you might want to try calling a few in your area and
check.

The spectral requirements for fish are different to those for other purposes
such as shop lighting.

Metal Halide lamps come in a wide range of outputs for the same power. It
depends on the composition of the gases used in the bulb and the pressures
(which are quite high so beware of breaking one).
Also their starting voltages and running currents differ for each type so
you must only use the correct power supply for the particular bulb.

It would be better to purchase one from an aquarium source.

I was only refering to the housing, which was the original question, not the
internals. But I do agree with you on your comment tho.

Could also try good ol' Ebay.

Never ceases to amaze me at the variety of unusual items that show up
on there :).

Got some VERY good buys on electronic components there over the last
couple of years too :)
