I have one of these units that just recently started to display the
word "DEW" on the bottom left corner of the screen. Also the vcr tape
system is not working. So I assume this is an error message of some
sort.

Is this likely worth fixing?

Thanks

Sounds like the DEW sensor has gone bad, or there is moisture in the VCR.

Hey Patch, I owe you an apology.

When I first read your reply, I laughed, assuming you were pulling my
leg. And then, later that day I tried the TV again and it worked fine.

I thought some more about what you said and realized that you must be
correct. I had the TV out in my RV where it got quite cold, and then
brought it in the warm air of the house, where, I assume, moisture
condensed on the inside, triggering the DEW sensor.

I never knew there WAS such a thing in TV's.

Anyhow, thanks for the quick reply and know that, thanks to you, I've
learned something - not just about the TV, but also not to be too
quick to judge.

Thanks

Peter

Peter:
Actually the DEW sensor has more to do with the VCR than with the TV but
since it is a "combo" unit everything is affected.
If condensation (DEW) forms on the spinning video head drum and other parts
of the VCR that touches the tape, the tape will stick to those parts and not
slide easily around them as it is suppose to. The DEW sensor helps prevent
the VCR from running the tape when this condition is detected and therefore
prevents irreversible damage to the tape and possibly to the expensive video
heads in the VCR..
An unheated motorhome or the trunk of a car is an environmentally
challenging place for a VCR..... particularly in the Fall, Winter, and early
Spring seasons. Running the television for an hour or two usually
generates enough heat to take care of the problem..... however the constant
cycles of condensation and evaporation can cause corrosion and permanent
damage to the sensitive metal parts therefore you would be smart to keep
some heat going in your motorhome .... or remove the TV/VCR unit and take it
into your heated home during the "off" season" or when there is a wide
variation in temperatures.
