That bulbous bit on the back axle of your car.

But a MAX232 is 5V, MAX3232 3V (ish).

LOL. But that's abbreviation too...

Haven't used RS232 for ages. But check the supply ranges, package/pin out
and cap requirements....

Both are expensive. If you have +-12 supplies, use a cheap level
shifter.

And be sure to never ever ever E V E R get the cheap Sipex version (of
any chip) or you'll be very sorry.

Why? I've used them in some admittedly not very demanding lab setups
and have not experienced any problems with them. I have NOT done A-B
comparisons with the Maxim parts nor scrutinized the waveforms but
they've worked OK for me up to 155 kBaud.

I had a MAX3232-equivalent quit on me in a lab environment (hot
plugging, but that's normal on RS-232). Actually, IIRC, it was the ST
version of that chip.
I've seen the MAX232 smoke under a hot plugging situation. It happened
often enough that we added resistors to the input and output lines. We
gave up a little drive but the chips failed a lot less. The transmitter
only seemed to need 100 ohms to keep it alive.

Yes, use the other 2 sections of that LM324 :>

BTW: I have to admit I really did use an LM324 as the RS232 buffer once.
We were counting chips.

What kind of bitrate did you get, if you don't mind my asking?

Thanks,

Yes, use the other 2 sections of that LM324 :
SN75155. $0.66 in small qty, SO-8.

Don't use a 324 as a comparator. When one section switches, it
glitches the others... shared current sources or something.

What are the modern equivalents for the mc1488/9 ?, i couldn't find
anything that was 12 volts out, just the 5v compatible or compliant
ones...

Thanks
