I've had some great help from this forum on other HiFi repair issues, so
here's another originally posted to alt.home-theater.misc.

I have a Marantz DP870 linked to a Marantz SR96 amp - the pair have done me
proud for about 7 years but I've recently realised that it's no longer
putting out a signal to my subwoofer.

For anyone familiar with the DP870 it has a switch on the rear to enable a
sub. I have this set to 'on' but the pink noise test signal skips the sub
during its test cycle, so I'm thinking the switch is not working.

Does anyone have any experience of this unit and know whether it would be
easy to fix such a problem? If so, any recommendations for repair centers
in the central Long Island, NY, area would be appreciated.

Jens,

Are you sure the sub woofer is out? Some surround units do not put out
a signal to the subwoofer during the set up test. Check the owner's
manual. Another thing you can try is to shut off (or disconnect) all of
the other speakers and play something with a lot of bass to see if you
can hear the sub.

I'll give that a try, but I'm 99.9% certain that it used to put out a test
signal for the sub too. I've tried using my Video Essentials DVD and when
it comes to the sub there's silence and it then skips to the first speaker
again.
