Is there any company that still produces germanium(sp?) diodes? I'm just curious
to know.

Yes, they're still produced. I recently bought some from American
Microsemi. They were supposed to be 1N270s, but they were unmarked.
Could be anything.

You might also consider using Schottky barrier diodes. They have low
voltage drop, maybe not as low as Germanuium at low currents, but
still very low. And they may be easier to get. You can hardly find
Germanium parts nowadays.

If you have a reason for using Germanium, you may be able to use a
design with silicon parts and get the same performance. For instance,
use power FETs as zero voltage drop rectifiers.

Don't be ripped off by the big book dealers. Go to the URL
that will give you a choice and save you money(up to half).

1N270 is still listed here:

<www.allelectronics.com>
I don't know who made them or how old they might be.

I would suspect even the point conctact diodes are still in
production. They get used in "crystal" radios and meter rectifiers.

http://www.angelfire.com/electronic2/index1/In34a.html has the 1N34's
for 8˘ in 1,000 quantities and 12˘ each.

http://www.advancedsemiconductor.com/diodes.html manufactures point
contact diodes for microwave applications
