Making an old laptop display into a monitor?

I have an old laptop with a nice display. Is there anyway to remove it
from the laptop (not working) and connect it to a desktop for a second
display? Any ideas? Am I trying something that is a pipe dream? Marc.

The display requires the dedicated drive electronics and logistics that are
in the drive board in the laptop for it. The display cannot be run
independently. This question comes up very often.

This comes up every couple months here, and the general answer is no,
there's no feasible way a hobbyist will be able to get this working, LCD
panels require a custom driver chip.

It can be done, but it's way too much trouble and not worth it.

Sounds like a fun project for a final year EE student - write some
software that runs on one of the faster PICs or AVR micros which
interfaces with the more common laptop LCD's, to display data on.

Does the display light up? Could just be the backlight tube or inverter.
