LVP programmer

I'm trying to program a pic 16f628 - I've tried the LVP programmer
(http://home.vrweb.de/~lotharstolz/stolz.de.be/lvpc/index.html) and
can't seem to get it to work. The connections all look ok - and I've
check with a scope that the programming pins at least do something when
programming. But I keep getting a verified failed. I read the data back
and its all zero's.

Can anyone offer any help - where do I start? Is there another
programmer I can build to program my pic?
 
Have you applied power to the PIC???

- did you connect /MCLR and +5V?
- if working on XP: did you select 'windows calls'?

This is about the most simple programmer I have ever seen, and
probably the most unreliable too. If your time is worth any money
forget all serial-port bit-fiddeling programmers and go for a serious
one, like: Wisp628 (mine), most kitsrus/DIY proggers, Warp-X, ICD2 or
a clone, etc

Yes, thats a good idea.
Does your programmer use a programmed PIC???
In a previous threat (where you also responded) he wanted to build the WISP
but needed a way to programm the PIC.
I suggested the LVP, this one has never failed me but I needed more
possibilities.

Perhaps you could look at the pre-programmed pic also found on Wouters site
(he also sells more stuff at a not too expensive price).

Yes. That is the only way to make a reliable programmer. Reliable
meaning: when someone builds it, it will work unless he made a
mistake.

Serial/parallel port pin wiggling programmers, and even more so the
ones that depends on the voltages on these ports, are notorious for
the trouble they cause to get working. Once they are working though
they will probably work, untill you change PC and/or Windows versions.
