I lack some of the models, and I'm running an old version, but after I
made some substitutions, it didn't crash. Maybe the problem lies in one
of those models.

Your two AC input pins have the same label, so the input is shorted.

subckt called "UA741"

The names don't match!

* the u1 message pops up BEFORE i added the subckt called "UA741".

The names don't match!

  Then if i add

* and if i change that to

i still get unknown schematic syntax

LTspice did not crash for me. The SCH you posted had errors though.

There are models missing for a couple of diodes.

I made a model file for the 741 and stuck it in .\Documents\LTspiceXVII\lib\sub

LTspice did not crash for me. The SCH you posted had errors though.

This diode has a subcircuit-model, but the standard symbol of a diode
provided by LTspice is for a ".model"-definition.

It's not a big deal to fix this problem.

Move the cursor over the body of the GV3S800-diode. Press the CTRL-key
and right-mouse-click. A window with all the attributes will pop-up.
One line is
Prefix: D
Change the D to X
Prefix: X
OK

That's all. Now the simulation will run.

Background info: The reference designators of subcircuits used in a
SPICE-netlist have to start with X whereas diodes have to start with D.

  It has been about 40 years since i messed with spice.
That did not work as advertised.
Best i could get was a pull-down filled with diode models.
So, i modified the program and put .MODEL descriptions in for running.
Well, the actual circuit oscillates and the simulation in effect latches.
I also find that there is no .PRINT and no .PLOT; my DOS-based spice
could put those fancy graphs on paper - and that was 25-30 years ago;
what gives?
