lowest volume setting too loud

Hello All,
Hopefully this is an easy question for you electronics wizzes.
I bought a mini stereo system/dvd player that I am happy with except for the
volume. Even on the very lowest setting, it is too loud. Is there any kind
of device that I can put inline between the outputs and the speakers that
would "step down" the wattage making it to the speaker? And if they would
cost a buck-a-piece at Radio Shack, that would be nice too;)

If it is that poorly designed I would take it back and demand my
money back. There is no reason to keep garbage like this. It just
encourages the manufacturers to build lower and lower quality garbage.

Something wrong there. The volume control should take it down to
zero. Suggest you take it back from wence it came.

It does take it down to zero. Zero has no sound and the next setting (1) is
too loud. It was $59 and has cd/dvd/am/fm and is just for the bedroom.
Don't want to spend alot for a bedroom system and thought that I might be
able to add some cheap resistors. But I'm not exactly sure how resistors
work. I'm thinking that they have a max output, but more intput is
converted to heat in which case they wouldn't serve my purpose. Is my
thinking correct? Maybe it's not worth all of the trouble and I should just
dampen the sound some other way or take it back, but I thought the post was
worth a try and that there might be some fairly easy way to step down the
wattage on the way to the speakers which would give me lower volume while
keeping the functionality of the volume control.

He may be talking about a step incremented volume control in which the
first step above zero (silence) is too loud for his application.

I had this once on a Grundig TV. In the dead quiet of night the TV
was quite loud, but one increment down was silence. Made it hard to
watch late night TV without disturbing the house mates.

It was less of a problem when I got the satellite receiver, as it had
it's own volume control as well. Perhaps Ricks new DVD player has a
volume control?

Try an L-pad of the appropriate wattage rating;

Exactly! Thanks for a real answer. I ended up going to radio shack and
getting basically what you recommend. Works perfectly. Now I can listen to
some quiet music while going to sleep.
