low VBE PNP transistor?

2N4403 is quite a bit better at Ic/Ib = 10, 8050 is better again, but
you should also consider a p-channel MOSFET.

Would a germanium pnp like a 2N404 work? These have Vbe 1/2 of the silicon
ones.
