Low budget in-house cellular repeater project questions

Howdy,
I would like to get rid of my land phone line. The only thing keeping me
from doing this is the relatively poor indoor reception on my cell phone
(outdoors is just fine). I can't justify spending $700 for a powered
repeater set-up, but since I get good outdoor reception, would it be
possible to couple a dual frequency (800 & 1900 MHz) high gain (36 dbi)
directional antenna directly to an indoor multi directional unit (both 50
Ohm impedance)? This would only cost a couple hundred bucks. Any advice or
other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not at all experience in this and I'm a newbie to electronics.

But have you tried one of those cellphone 'stick on' antennas? I
don't know what they are called but you stick them onto the phone and
they (supposedly) improve reception.

I would think your method would be broadcasting your entire
converstation to the neighbourhood. Anyone with a cell phone with
that frequency might be able to listen in on your conversation (or am
I wrong?)

They are a scam.

Yes, you are wrong. Cell phones transmit on on frequency, and
receiver on another, while the base station uses the opposite pair of
frequencies.
