Looking for one-off aluminium sheet offcut

Guest
Does anyone have an Al sheet offcut in their bin that they can spare,
14 or 16 Ga (18 is too bendy), 300 x 300 mm minimum size. Needs to be
reasonably flat, but surface scratches or marking isn't a problem.

Application is an internal bracket for a one-off device.

Altronics and Jaycar don't seem to souce any longer, and the metal
suppliers have MOQs that are ridiculous in this one-off instance.

I can collect from anywhere in Perth metro. Mangled email follows...

Drop in to just about any sheet metal place and give them 5 bucks for
their morning tea fund - it's worked for me many a time.

What suburb?

Some scrap dealers resell, I have a pet one in sydney that deals in most
non ferrous metals with a small amount of steel and I regularly don a
fluoro jacket and boots and fossick and come away with al or stainless
sheet, bar and round stock, to use in lathe even some titanium once.

IME, yes. If you're after fencing, reasonably problem free, but anything
else can be problematic, especially specialised stuff.

Many years ago there used to be a place in Manly Vale in Sydney, where
anybody could buy cut-to-size sheet, extrusions and you name it. I also have
a recollection of later going to a similar place somewhere near Minchinbury.
However, wind forward to perhaps five years ago, and I could not find
anywhere that was selling aluminium like that. Have those sort of places
really disappeared all over the country?

There was an Alcan here on GEH in Belmont (WA...) who allowed you to
rummage through their scrap dumpster and pay a per-kg price for
wahtever you wnated. They stopped that a good ten years back and the
reason they gave was legal liability.

In the last year have bought offcuts of sheet at Alucom in Canberra of
all places. I would expect cities which have any manufacturing industry
to have many more suppliers. You could also ask at Metalmart. I think
the one near me has a guillotine and will cut to size, for a fee. I
think that 10 minutes with the yellow pages and a phone ought to find a
supplier near you.

**WTF is "14 or 16ga"?

Try specifying the size in mm. Australia has been a Metric nation for
decades. Whenever I've specified metalwork, the supplier always demands
dimensions in mm.

That's just bullshit, there is no legal liability.
