Looking for narrow isolating tapes

Hi, everyone!

Can someone share a secret, where do you get those narrow (like 0.1")
isolating tapes that are used for making security margins (sorry if the
wrong term - I mean keeping windings to the central part of bobbins) in
transformer bobbins? I can't believe those frequent winders do cut wider
tapes with scissors or knives as I do, there must be a source for
ready-made tapes. I do understand that I can order such tapes in tons
quantities from 3M etc., but unfortunately I'm just a mere hobbyist and I
don't need that much...

Any information is highly appreciated.

how about old layout tapes from Bishop Graphics ?
should still be availble in some in some graphic supply houses.

Are you sure they are isolating? I'm extremly suspicious for that black
paint, isn't it carbon based?

Tape MUST be isolating (kapton, mylar, good electric paper etc.) otherwise
one doesn't need it at all...

afaik these Bishop Graphics tapes are mylar, come in black or red and
maybe few other colors.
our guys used them to make artwork, outdated method today.

May be. But I can't believe that professional winders that wind thousands of
transformers daily do really use something like this. There MUST be some
place where they get such tapes ! :))

If you're one of the big guys, you can have it custom made to your
specifications. The little guys have to find other ways! ;-)

I just buy in 20mm width rolls of Acetal tape and slice through the
whole roll to give me several rolls of different width tapes suitable
for pot cores etc.
Remember though that if you use any tape on the bobbin prior to
winding, the windings will amplify the irregularity. This becomes
especially important if there are lots of layers.

Heh, I can slice standard tapes too. I was looking for ready-made ones...

In order to get even layers you should put enough turns of that edge tape to
make it level with the winding. This way you'll have a very nice windings up
to the very last layer. I wound 17 layer tube output transformer this
weekend with the top layer being completely flat and even. 6 times 2 layers
120 turns 30 AWG each and 5 layers of 55 turns 26 AWG each inbetween. Took
me the entire Saturday to wind it by hand. BTW, those 26 AWG windings were
narrower so I had to use two widths of a paper tape... And a layer of kapton
between the layers makes miracles :))
