I need variable 0-to at least 170 V at 10 amps or more.

Autotransformer with hefty capacitors comes to mind but you didn't
specify regulation etc..

Don't forget some rectification.

After being targeted with gigabytes of trash by the "SWEN" worm, I have
concluded we must conceal our e-mail address. Our true address is the
mirror image of what you see before the "@" symbol. It's a shame such
steps are necessary. ...Charlie

Oversight corrected thanks!

that is a good one! :))
how filtered do you want it? :)
the simplest thing that comes to mind is
an adjustable autotransformer into a bridge with
some caps., how ever, getting caps to operate for
half way filtering at 170 volts at 50/60 hz maybe a
problem..

Figure 10,000 uF at 200 V to get 10 V ripple if the source has a low
enough resistance and high peak current. 100,000 uF for 1 V ripple.

Maybe if we knew more about the application, there could be some more
useful suggestions.
