Lookijng for manufacturers of heating cable (for underfloor

Can anybody tell me of manufacturers of HEATING CABLE suitable for
underfloor heating / bathroom mirror demisting etc.

I have found a supply in a trade electronics catalogue but it seems
extraordinarily expensive at USD180 for 20m !

I am tempted to just use some uninsulated iron wire.

Does anybody have any suggestions of source please ?

It's not very durable (rust, you know), but for low voltage it is OK. By
'low', I mean *LOW*, like 'not more than 5 V', if it's a bathroom.

Hi Peter,

You might want to check Asian sites. "Fog free" mirrors are popular in some hotels over there so it should be a more common item than it is in the US. I believe it wasn't wires though but some kind of foil taped to the back.

I have used the 1 mm galvanised plastic coated iron wire from a garden
centre under my bathroom floor. It runs from a big 12 v transformer and it
is happily heating after 4 years. Of course, the resistance is lower than
real heating cable

That's more like it. Nice and cheap!

I think I know the green plastic coated wire you refer to but did not
know that it was galvanised iron. That should be ideal

I will probably wind a suitable secondary on a torroidal transformer
myself as it will only need a few turns of heavy copper wire.

I am so puzzled that the trade magazines in the UK, such as RS, have
heating cable but it is wildly expensive. Yet whatever the cable is
that is used in electric bed blankets must be really cheap.

I'm not sure where to locate Asian sites that will supply to the UK
but would appreciate any links.
