I've not opened one up to find out, but look for the TDA8551.
I just bought a few at 50 cents each and they are designed,
so far as I can tell, for exactly those kinds of computer
speaker systems. I have different purposes for mine, though.

I've not opened one up to find out, but look for the TDA8551.

Seems that it's quite hard to buy this one... at least not easy in Hong
Kong...

Odd. I got mine from Avnet. I have 100. More than I need. If
you don't require a regular source, email me and I'd be happy
to send some along.

As another option perhaps, try doing a search with
octopart.com and findchips.com and see if the sources they
list are also available to you. The names I see, with stock,
are Newark, Future, Digikey, Mouser, Distrelec Italia,
element14, Quest, Bristol Electronics, etc. I would imagine
that element14 should be accessible to you, at least.

It used a You Wang UTC2025 stereo amplifer chip. The datasheet says
that's good from 3-12 volts. It says minimum current draw is 40 mA,
so that might be a bit much for battery power.

There's also the LM4928 from TI that is a stereo version. And
the TDA8581, the stereo version of the TDA8551 I'd mentioned.
(I didn't mention the TDA8581, partly because it is hard to
get.) The LM4928 also isn't easy, though Mouser appears to
have them (at $1.35 ea.) I don't know anywhere to get the
UTC2025. Not anywhere. So I'd be stuck with the 1.2W LM4928
if I were looking as a hobbyist, I think, for stereo versions
(of the three I know about, anyway.)

By the way, the TDA8551 and TDA8581 and LM4928 all have very
low power modes. And the Iq of the TDA8551 is 6mA typ, 10mA
max and is very avaialble. The LM4928, which is at least
"gettable" has an Iq of 4mA, 7.5mA max.

Interesting what was being used in the speakers. Didn't know
about that part. (Got the data sheet, though.. WOW, you are
right about the Iq!)
