LG... life's good?

Is it true that LG (Life's Good) is actually the re-badged (lucky) Goldstar
brand?

I know there are few techy's here and was wondering if there are any views
and thoughts about the quality of LG branded electronics?

I'm thinking of getting a stainless steel side by side fridge (with ice
maker ofcourse). LG has one for $2100. This is around $1000-$2000 cheaper
than the other brands and am very suspicious... (you know the saying... you
get what you pay for...)

Not rebadged, Lucky Goldstar is the name of the company. Life's Good
is their advertising slogan.

I haven't tried their fridges but their TVs, washing machines, and
computer components seem reasonable quality (without being outstanding.)

A friend has recently installed one of their air conditioners, but it is
too early to know how reliable it will prove to be.

They appear to be pretty good. The re-inventing themselves is part of their
process of moving up the food-chain, so to speak, by improving quality and
reputation without having to force people to discard their opinion of the
original Goldstar quality.

I thought it stood for:
"Lucky it Goes" especially
after their early TV efforts

It was a dark and stormy night, and KoRRupT managed to scribble:

I recently bought one of their 17inch monitors.

Cheap and well designed - about as good as you can make it without a trinitron tube.

Hmmm. We bought a new two door LG fridge about 18 months ago. It died
after 6 months (on Christmas Eve to make matters worse). Maybe it was
a one-off bad luck story? I could accept that but any goodwill I might
have had was flushed away with the treatment we received.

The fridge was eventually replaced about a month later by the retailer
we purchased it from after total frustration dealing with LG in
Sydney. I have to say, I think their after sales service was
shockingly bad.

I hope they have improved since, but I would personally never buy such
an appliance from them again.

But that sort of treatment is standard for most brands

thanks for your interesting story glenn. what happened to your fridge?
compressor died? door fell off?

regarding bad after market service, i'm surprised you had to talk to LG
directly... couldn't you have gone back to where you purchased the fridge
originally??

Don't recall all the details but we had to go to LG to find a service
agent who was available over the Xmas break. There wasn't one anyway.
For a warranty repair, I suspect that is pretty normal.

Never found out what the problem was. First (mis)diagnosis was a
faulty defrost timer, then some type of fan fault was diagnosed next
but at that point we were told there was no spare in Australia and it
would take another four weeks to get the part. At that point we went
back to the retailer for a full replacement. They responded very
quickly.

I think this sort of treatment is becoming standard because there is too small a margin left in products for proper service. We
can't expect everything to be dirt cheap *and* to have excellent service.
