My apologies for a dumb question but electronics ain't my thing.

I have purchased some LEDs c/w resistors. Do I connect the resistor in
parallel with the LED and is there a right or wrong way round for the
resistor?

The resistor goes in SERIES with the LED. It does not matter which way
round the resistor goes.

Thanks Gareth,
D/Q 2. So I should connect it between the positive terminal and the positive
side of the LED?

Yes.

The resistor can go between the LED and the positive supply, or between
the LED and the negative supply, it makes no difference (obviously the
LED must be the right way round though).

resistor LED (cathode or flat spot to the right)
+ o----/\/\/\----|>|------o -

You gave no indication of what value the resistors are. With a single
value, you are limited to a certain maximum voltage for that LED's
maximum rated current.
