LED's and Ebay questions

A little while ago someone had said that they had bought 50 LED's from ebay
and provided a link to the item. The price was really cheap 8 dollars plus
shipping 5 dollars. That is a real deal.

If you don't mind waiting two weeks for the LEDs, check out
besthongkong on ebay. I purchased 50 ultra bright white LEDs for $8 +
$5 shipping, 11000mcd. They work great and you can order a 1/4w
resistor for each one for a penny each. The LEDs are the same specs as
the rip off shacks at $5 each.

Unfortunately the item had expired. After some searching I found another
sale which appears to be the same thing.
The company besthongkong.com seems to have has many,many,many LED's listed
on ebay or on their site. I am NOT an ebay person so have never dealt with
it and have a couple of questions about the LED's for my project and buying
on ebay.

I want to make a couple of night lights for the cottage pathway. Sure I
could buy those cheesy path lights but what would be the fun in that.

My questions are :
1. ebay lists "50 11000mcd Ultra Bright White LED Hot! LEDs Light" Are these
small LED's the type you would use in a small circuit. Would they be right
for this for this project ?? Or are they simply too small to really provide
enough light?

2. I'm not sure what the viewing angle means. These above are 20. It appears
that most are 20.

3. I have also seen from this same company the below LED. It has a MCD of
20000. Unfortunately they only seem to sell them in quantities of 100. I
cant tell if they are 5mm or not. Its not clear to me. Are these better than
the ones above. They seem to have almost twice the brightness ?

4. I see that the company has jumbo LED's maybe that what I should use. They
are 12V. But I can't see how much light they give out.

10 White LED Wedge Base Bulb 194 158 168 Light LEDs

Sadly the shipping is more than the bulbs, not sure why. 10 of the bigger
LEDS must weigh less than the 50 of the smaller. Anyway would this be a
better solution? The only thing is they seem to have a base on them, This is
yet something else I would have to get, and deal with.


5. What is the best way to buy things on ebay. Is this paypal free, and the
best way to go. Any suggestions. or even any better place to get cheap
LED's.

Others here have noted that the brightness drops rapidly if these LEDs are
run
near their maximum as compared to first quality / expensive LEDs. You
should probably derate them by 50%. You can add more LEDs for more light
output. The heat from soldering could be a problem too so use a heat sink
and
be quick about the task. You don't say how you are going to power the LEDs
or if there are any reflectors involved.

What you are saying is that these LEDS are not the best quality and may not
produce the desired result.

How do you know when you buy LED's that they have not simply bought the same
one's Im looking at and are reselling them.
How do you know they are good quality? Generally they are in their some
packaging which does not identify really who made them. BestHongKong most
likely does what everyone else does. Goes to manufacturers and says I need 1
Million LEDS what the price. Then packages them up. Who knows who makes them
??

I think you've answered your own question! If you want the best quality, go
to the
manufacturer. They don't want their name associated with crap so they don't
sell
it themselves.

The bulk vendors buy parametric failures, functional but they don't meet
spec. There
is no telling what specifications were failed. Often, these are fine for
non critical or
hobbyist use.

The bulk vendors buy these because they maximize their profit in this way.

Yep! Do not expect top performance from a bargain bin. Learn to recognize
what I call "sales speak" which is often the art of verbosely saying
nothing.
