Hi all,

I am looking for a display driver that can drive 7 character 16
segment alphanumeric LED display. The display driver will be serially
driven by a PIC12C508.

The MM5450 (http://www.micrel.com/_PDF/mm5450.pdf) is just perfect for
my application but I'm having to use two of them to power all the
segments that I need to power in all combinations of the message that
will be displayed.

So I was wondering if there is a device like the mm5450 that can
source and sink current while still having the simple brightness
control mechanism of the mm5450. Maybe the mm5450 can source current
in the "segment off" condition. Has anyone ever tried that?

The max6955 (http://pdfserv.maxim-ic.com/en/ds/MAX6955.pdf) is another
good possibility but it throws off my budget. My target cost of
components for this remote display unit is under $10.00 + the cost of
the LED segments. I can do without the fancy I/O expander and key scan
functions if there is a downscaled device with same LED driving
functions as a 6955. The max6955 is a very cool device though.

Welcome any/all suggestions.

Thanks,

Shahid
