Learning PCI

I thought I'd take on a summer project and teach myself some basic PCI
design. Can anyone recommend some websites and books that would get me
started? Anyone have any tips? Suggestions for a first project?
Caveats? Angry rants?

I have fairly good resources in the way of equipment with which to
test and manufacture what I design. My background is a just completed
degree in comp. eng., and a limited amount of experience with hobby
electronics.

Many thanks,

Chris

I'd start off by designing something simple using a PLX PCI interface chip
and getting that to work. I'd then progress to designing my own interface
using a suitable FPGA.
