Anyone know how these work?

A: Because it messes up the order in which people normally read text.
Q: Why is top-posting such a bad thing?
A: Top-posting.
Q: What is the most annoying thing on usenet?

yes
Thanks, I was thinking that they "just happened"..

I'd like to be one of those who know how they work..

shine a laser pointer through a diffraction grating onto a wall. you
should get a line of dots out the other side. that's it for basic
principles, from there on in you just need to design the right kind of
diffraction device.

Well, they have a laser diode, and a battery. The battery
forces current through the diode, and it lases.

HTH!

They use a specially designed 'grating', which is composed of dots
and clear bits in a very special pattern that causes the light to
bend due to diffraction.

Search on
"diffraction grating" "laser pointer"
on google.
Read a few of the links.

Thanks, I didn't know it was a diffraction grating. That makes all the
difference.

Google for "sams laser faq" (Google ignores caps and
punctuation). More than you wanted to know.

Exactly. I didn't know they were diffraction gratings, so I couldn't find
anything useful on them.
