I have a Toshiba Satellite (3-4 years old) running XP. When I insert a
card of any type e.i. modem, lan, etc I get no reaction from the
computer. I had the same problem before I changed from WIN98.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Some systems, and WIN98 is one of them, include drivers, etc. for some
hardware. If the system does not locate the information, it is necessary for
you to provide a disc with the drivers for your hardware.

I suspect you may be omitting something in the installation process.

I do not have experience with Toshiba laptops, only with IBM Thinkpads. IBM
has a support site with all necessary drivers. An IBM laptop requires
drivers to enable a PCMCIA card to be recognized. It is very likely this is
the case with a Toshiba laptop. I would go to the Toshiba internet site and
find the driver page/s. Enter the model number and you should be able to get
all the drivers.

Use your desktop, go the company website for the specific LAN card you are
attempting to use, and download the latest drivers for XP. Copy these files
to either a cd or floppy. Reboot the laptop and install the drivers via the
control panel, new hardware installation. Have done this many times with
good success. Another question, are you sure that the PCMCIA Slot is
functioning properly, maybe you need to go to Toshiba's side and download a
set of drivers specific to your model of laptop.
