Has anyone got plans for a simple lan cable tester out there? My
network works but am having trouble with slow speeds, i wan't to be
able to check for crossed over wires or shorts. I was thinking of some
type of led thing that could be plugged into each end of the cable and
show with leds if all is ok. any suggestions or diagrams appreciated.

What sort of network are we talking about.- ie speed etc, do you have
switches/routers or hubs etc. As for crossed wires and shorts, a
multimeter should be more than capable. The ping command is your friend!!

A very simple system which you could use is shown here
http://www.southwest.com.au/~jfuller/rj45/rj45.htm

Note it still works for 568B but you need to be aware of the swap of
the OR and GN pairs.

or, this more complex system could be the way to go

Sorry should have spent more time writing.

I have two 10/100 hub/switches, one is uplinked to the other as i
couldn't run more cables between my house and shed. I am using cat 5
cable with rj45 plugs,i have 3 points on one hub to check and 4 points
on the other.
I have checked the cable for shorts with the multimeter but can't
check through the hubs from one computer to the other.
Regards Philip

You don't check cabling continuity "through" hubs or any active
devices. If you want to do end-to-end cabling tests then you should
use a patch panel and patch the respective link cables being tested
end to end. It seems you may not have a patch panel so you will have
to test each link cable individually.
