LAKELAND | An 18-year-old Lakeland man was arrested Thursday and charged
with shooting another teenager in retaliation for the shooting of his
cousin, a Lakeland police spokeswoman said.
Demarrius Antonio Faniel was booked into the Polk County Jail on charges
of attempted first-degree murder with a firearm, discharging a firearm
in public and improper exhibition of a firearm.
He remained in jail Friday without bond.
The victim was Jahmel Hogan, 16, an arrest affidavit says.
Faniel fired the shot at about 12:20 a.m. May 30 in a parking lot at
West Memorial Boulevard and Anderson Avenue, said LPD Sgt. Terri Smith.
Hogan had gathered in the parking lot in a group of about 25, the
affidavit said. It says Faniel, who was with his own group, approached
Hogan and another person and said, "Somebody gonna die tonight."
Another member of the group gave Faniel a firearm, the affidavit says,
and he waved it toward the crowd.
He pointed it at Hogan, who was struck in the buttocks while fleeing,
according to the report.
The report doesn't say how Faniel left the parking lot, or where exactly
he was arrested. Police identified him as a suspect and a witness picked
him from a photo lineup.
Hogan and a witness told police that Faniel is a member of a gang named
the Brick Boyz. The affidavit says Faniel had blamed them for the
shooting of his cousin, a fellow gang member.
That shooting happened May 29 during a graduation party at the Freedom
Center of Lakeland, 635 W. Fifth St., Smith said. Melton Marcellis, 15,
of Lakeland, was struck in the leg.
"He suddenly saw a bright flash come from the group, felt a sharp pain
in right leg and began running," Smith said.
