A relay could be considered as a linear actuator, as well as a plunger
solenoid..
....lots less expensive...

Solenoids and Linear Actuator are different things.
A Linear Actuator is usually a DC motor.
The direction of rotation of a dc motor can be reversed
by reversing its magnetic field.
With a solenoid, the windings are energized by application of current
and the magnet pulls or pushes the rod.

As long as application of electrical power can get something to moce
in a linear fashion, thenone can use it as a linear actuator, without
regard to looks or design or use of springs (or not).
