Kyoto animation studio fire

Seems like a very high death toll for that kind of office structure for
what sounds like a clumsy arson attempt with a bit of gasoline. Must
have created a very fast-moving fire that blocked the only exit on the
ground floor and trapped people on the upper floors? Doesn't look like
there's any other way out except jumping from up there.

Doesn't look like any fire suppression system to speak of, either. Could
have probably survived by escaping to the roof, roof door likely locked
to prevent suicide attempts

Mass murderers are almost always executed.

The criminal judicial system in Japan has no provisions for a sentence of life without parole. And it's difficult to impossible to plead insanity there:

Yes, it's even a plot point in the Japanese series "Million Yen Women";
the main character is a young novelist whose father is on death row for
murdering a police officer, and he visits him there.

The son of the perpetrator also assists in the household care/living
expenses of the slain police officer's mother, some kind of
family-shame-penance-thing which may or may not actually be a real
custom, or just fictional situation, I don't know.

If the insanity is incurable, there's no reason it should mitigate. We
are right to neutralise harmful things. It's a cost minimisation
activity, like most criminal penalties (so mis-named!)

The perpetrator was burned pretty badly and may not survive, so this issue may become moot.
As for motive, he claimed the anime company had stolen ideas from a novel he wrote, made a bundle off it, and never paid him a single yen.
