HI I have a 14.5 kohler engine in a Bolens lawn tractor. Well it
runs great but sometimes when I am mowing it will run for sometime
then just die. Then it will not start, just turns over, no spark. If
I let it sit and cool down for an hour or so then I try it and it runs
fine. What the heck could be the problem? Some info please cuz it
is a pain to get half the lawn done then wait and hour to finish
it........ thanks!! Clint

If you lose spark, there aren't many causes. Defective magneto probably.
But check the magneto clearance - may be marginal. And check the
wiring. More in the Lawnmower Repair Guide at the site below.

Sounds like a bad coil or condensor. I had a similar problem with a chainsaw.
Coil secondary resistance went from 5.6K at room temperature to 48K at 175
degrees F, and open circuit at greater than 190 degrees. Resistance dropped
agfain to normal as the coil cooled to room temp. Very repeatable.

I wonder if freeze spray would verify that.

Anytime I had issues with magnetos, I replaced the points and condenser
and was good to go for another 7 years or so. I worked on older Wico
magnetos, but you may have a different beast so this advice may not apply.

If it is a 100% solid state module, replacement is likely necessary. You
might try relocating it to a spot that is cooler as it is temperature
sensitive.
