If you're shopping for electronics at HH Gregg be warned! There is a chance
you won't get to see your rebate. Its been over three months now and I am
still waiting for my $30

Officemax is just as bad. They owe me a $40 I've been waiting 3 months now.

There is a class action lawsuit in progress in three states against Best Buy
and CompUSA concerning rebates from Newcom.

Whenever you buy from the above establishments always keep this in mind and
keep a copy of your receipts

They probably hold all rebate money as long as possible to earn interest on
it. Typical sharp business practices.

Shouldn't take more than a week or two to process a rebate. Bet it wouldn't
take them three months to process an overdue notice if someone owed THEM
money!

There was a thread on this recently in a local forsale newsgroup (dfw.forsale). Fry's does the same thing. It seems that several places have been using this as a scam. For example, There will be rebate information on the aisle with the object to be purchased but if you read through the fine print you'll discover that the rebate period is already over. Another trick seems to be to delay and delay. If you beat on them they'll eventually cough up the rebate but if you don't, it might never be sent. It appears that they are playing the numbers with the amount of people that either:

A) never get around to sending in the form until it's too late.

B) Will not followup when rebates are delayed and forgotten.

There seems to be a lot of evidence for this. People who've waited 6-8 months and still haven't heard anything were not real uncommon.

On the other hand, a 2-3 month wait untill receiving the rebate (when you DO get it) isn't too unusual either.

And of course, as we learned when sending boxtops away for something
when we were kids, those waits always seem longer, precisely because
you are looking for it.

Being an eternal cheapskate, I usually end up getting the best deal by
sending in a rebate for things like hard drives, software, memory sticks,
etc. I have had the most success with Best Buy. I sent in several to Fry's,
although they made me wait a good long time. The worst recent one was for
CDR's from Fuji. Even though FujiFilm has a nifty rebate registration via a
web site, it took 4 months to get the check. The only one that I never got
back was for a spindle of CompUSA's brand of CDR's.

I hate rebates, but I still send them in.

Funny. I often get rebates from OfficeMax but recently, one was rejected
because they substituted SPIN-X CD's that had an incorrect UPC number. I
asked them several times when I bought it but they said it was an "approved
substitute". Well, the folks at the rebate center never got the word. I
copied all my papers and the manager said he would take care of it. It has
been four months now and he said that he has sent it off to the regional
manager. I have made four trips to the store now on this one rebate. The
rebate was for $7 but it is the principle of the thing, as you well
know.....

Read all the fine print prior to purchase. I mail in all my rebates and have
yet to be burned by a one of them.

NewCom is long since out of business...I believe they went bankrupt.

Indeed. Keep on top of things, and keep copies of stuff. If you don't get
what you deserve, and you have followed the rules/fine print/etc... go after
'em.

Personally, I hate the mail in rebate concept, but I like getting the
checks!

Watch out for checks written on post cards. I got a rebate on a postcard, and
was about to toss it with the other junk main into the trash, until i realized
what it was.

I've gotten a dozen or so rebates without a problem, but they were all from
established companies.
Some were of the postcard type as well, and one of the rebates, for $100, took
four or five months to process.

The key it seems, is whether or not the company has had a long-standing
reputation.

saw.
Then, i bought a case of richard petty oil. forgot about the rebate and it
arrived
about a year 1`/2 late! The last HD rebates were about a month or two.
