Hello, there:

I was a VLSI engineer in China, I worked in digital integrated circuits
design
for a few years and I am looking for opportunities in Australia. What are
the
popular job hunting websites for skilled professions like VLSI, electronics
research & development? What are the well known cities such companies
are located? What are the newspapers I can subscribe in order to look for
such jobs?

For us, Shanghai is where all VLSI jobs are located. I browsed through
monster.com.au, but it gave me an impression of lack of skilled
opportunities.

There ain't that many jobs like this in Australia, and some don't get
advertised directly at all.

Australia does not have a large fab. http://www.awa.com.au/ used to own a
fab but I have no idea what happened to it. In other words China/Taiwan are
first world countries for VLSI and Australia is third world!

I once worked with an engineer doing design for mutilayer PCMCIA so there
are some jobs.

from my experience most engineering jobs in Aus are generalist.. even when
they often appear otherwise in the add.. and I also believe there to be a
severe lack of skilled engineering jobs available. The present 5%
unemployment rate isnt because of engineering.

Unless you need to be here, I would save yourself some heartache and go to
more lucrative markets or change fields. Experience says shanghai has an
expiration date when skilled employment will also go elsewhere.

It seems to me there is really few VLSI positions in australia. What are the
few
countries that have large numbers of VLSI jobs? US, UK and Germany?
I don't like asian countries.

France and Germany are currently running over 12% unemployment. The UK is a
possibility but it is a bit like here. If you lose a job there, you may be
looking for a long time. The US is the place to be in the long term but the
problem is the bubble burst a couple of years ago and there is now a major
oversupply of engineers in the market, despite what propaganda is floating
around... however there are signs of life as well as what was a stampede of
people leaving the field altogether.

I personally know of quite a number of graduates who have never worked in
electronics engineering simply because they had better offers in allied
fields, eg. computing or cad. I also know alot who have left the field
completely. Their opinion was they thought there was more pain to be had
than otherwise. Somehow I suspect when I hear an employer complaining about
the lack of engineers its because many are not willing to either move, or
move back into an unsteady field or job.

I was out looking for work a few months ago and was testing the waters in
the states. I was given offers in penang, shanghai or taiwan, but none were
prepared to import me to the US. I didnt want to live in those places so I
kept my job here... but it gives you an idea where there is work *at the
moment*. My personal belief is that you need a couple of employment skill
options in this day an age. ie VLSI + x + y where x and y are substantially
different.

There are a couple of companies that deal with vlsi here in Perth, Lateral

Yeah, beyond digital VLSI, I am also knowledgeable in wireless
communications,
image processing, microprocessors and DSP in general. I am sure I will find
a
position somewhere soon.

Power companies have been hiring quite a few graduates and appear to be
after more.

Mining , gas and oil always take a few but based up in Darwin or northern
W.A.

Seem to be quite a few Physics jobs going and having an improved starting
wage
compared to a few years back.
