Anyone bought the lathe Jaycar are currently selling
and, if so, what do you think of it? Also do you think
any of the "Accessories" are worth buying?

Hi Mick,

I looked at this some time back. If I were you I would check out carba-tec.
They sell the same lathe but the price tag is quite a bit less (about $200?)
although Im not sure if Jaycar include extra tooling.

www.carbatec.com.au

price I just checked to be $589

Nick

As a side note, if you want something cheap you might try a similar lathe
from adelaide....... www.clisby.com.au. I cant say what its like though.
Also carbatec have the big brother to the jaycar one that'll do screwcutting
at $995

The Jaycar one is $575 wholesale though Electus Distribution.
No idea if it's any good though.

i had a bit of a look at these and really think they are too small to be
much good. I'm a fitter and turner with 30 years experiance and the
first problem i noticed is the bed length, by the time you put a chuck
in the tailstock and a drill bit, you are going to have bugger all room
at the headstock room. I have a micro lathe in the shed with attachments
to do just about everything, Milling, planer, jigsaw, grinder screw
cutting and find it has the same limitations in respect to bed length.

A 4 jaw chuck would be handy as well, but they could be available.

As for screw cutting on it's bigger brother, take it from me your better
off buying a set of good quality tap an dies, without a chasewheel for
the screwcutting you have to reverse the motor between cuts to run the
tool back, otherwise you could engage on a different tooth on the feed
screw and ruin the cut. this running backwards is a pain for the time
wasted and you could have backlash in the drive gears that might not get
taken out before you start the next cut which could be interesting :)

Personally i'd save a bit more money and buy something around a 3' bed.
even a secondhand one at that size would give good service if you spent
a bit of time to true it all up.

That said i still find the micro lathes handy for the small stuff. Not
often you can say you bored out a 4mm hole on a lathe with a boring bar
made from a 1mm allen key and got a perfect size and finish.

If your after a lathe and handy with the tools how about making your own
like this bloke has done.

Thanks everyone for the responses, very useful.
From this and other enquiries it looks as if the lathe
is a decent performer for the money, albeit a bit on
the small side. I'll let you know how it performs.

Thanks again
