Is There really much of a diffence?

Evening gents & Ladies,

Is There really much of a diffence, as far as your average user
is compared to Dolby Pro Logic Stereo,5.1 or 7.1
or dare I say it the old quad Stereo?
(Mine is Pro Logic. Which I admit sounds great even when 5.1 is played
through it.)

Regards,
Mitch

I really think you should have a read here first.

http://www.dvddemystified.com/dvdfaq.html#3.6.3

Once you have done that and had a bit of a read of some of the other
articles you will see that "Yes" there is a big difference and no you are
not playing 5.1 through a Pro-Logic system.

Thanks for the info. No I did not wish to infer that I would be listening
to 5.1
sound through my pro logic system, It would still be pro logic resolved NOT
5.1

The difference between ProLogic and DD 5.1 (assuming decent speakers etc) is
HUGE!!
DTS & 6.1 & 7.1 - less so, but still significant given the right setup.

Mitch,

I have both Dolby Prologic and also Dolby 5.1 (using a digital link to
the amplifier), and, quite frankly, I wouldn't say there are any
enormous differences. They both sound pretty good to me.

As to differences that are HUGE, as a previous poster intimates, then
HUGE in my book is the difference betwen AM and FM radio, or vinyl and
CD's. Or adding a subwoofer to a non-sub system.

On that scale I'd say the differences between Dolby Prologic and Dolby
5.1 are minor and mostly undetectable by your usual reasonably
informed audio consumer.

The difference is enough that if you had Dolby 5.1 you would never use
prologic. Same as DTS vs Dolby, if a dvd offers DTS, I'd always go
with DTS.

Not necessarily ;-) This is where it gets very interesting. IMHO DD at 448
kbs is better than half bitrate DTS at 786 kbs.

Not all DTS is created equal - here endth the lesson ;-)
