bit of fluff?

With the exception of "Pease Porridge", yes.

And even his column is pretty sad. When's the last time Pease has
written a column with real technical "meat" in it?

But Bob ran dry years ago. Now he mostly talks blather or publishes a
lot of hero-worshiping letters from readers, and occasionally says
"RIGHT ON! - rap"

It must be a pain coming up with something every month. The editorials
are equally bad, except they're written by journalism majors.

Well, I just like the guy. The problem is, National has wrung him out
traveling around the world doing one day seminars for weeks at a time.
The seminars are lousy by the way - not because of Bob Pease - he's only on
the mike for about 5 minutes out of each hour - but because of the junior
sales 'droids droning on about National's latest burnt offerings for the
other 55 minutes.

Jim, you shouldn't expect meat in porridge ;-)

Design Briefs or Ideas (whatever they call it) is the best part but getting
skimpy there as well. First thing I look at but sadly sometimes the only thing.

Maybe it comes from paying peanuts and issuing bad checks, and not
replacing them?

I attended one here in Phoenix. Very low on Pease-comedic content,
very long on blatant sales pitches.

Missed. Try again Monday.

BANG.

Missed. Try again Monday.
From a TV cartoon seen as a kid, two hombres standing
face-to-face, "I rarely miss at this range."

BHAM, smoke obscures the scene, clears to find the two
hombres still standing face-to-face, "You missed."

Thanks,

Lessee, I did a IFD, Penton (whichever magazine that is, I always get
the two mixed up) sent me a check for $100 (almost a year after I sent
the article to them), but made out to some fellow in India. I called
them, they wanted me to physically return the check rather than them
simply voiding it and replacing it. I did so, to the address and name
requested. A couple months later I got the correct check, looking like
it might have been to India and back. I deposited it and it bounced.
Called them a few times, wrote a letter, sent the check back with a
letter to a lady there, nothing. It's been over 2 years now- more
time, bank charges and phone calls spent trying to collect than it's
worth, certainly at my regular billing rate, and to add insult to
injury the value has dropped by maybe a third over that time period. I
guess they need that little $100 way more than I do. They were
certainly prompt about depositing the many thousands of dollars I sent
them when advertising in their publications.

On a more general note, for anyone in business, especially when
dealing with smaller suppliers, I think that paying promptly is highly
underrated. So many people try to squeeze and extra month or two out
of all their suppliers as free financing that paying like clockwork at
20 or 30 days DOES get noticed. One major customer in Michigan pays
within a day or two every time. Another so-and-so in the NYC area
never pays until they've received at least one notice (and always
complains about the price as kind of a reflex action despite being a
smaller customer). Guess which one gets the better deal in the long
run...

That's what I expect. The technical low down on their new parts and
some application examples. I need that information to get an idea on
what's 'out there' when I'm thinking about a design. I sat through an
Analog Devices shpeel at the ESC and it looked like one of those
commercials on PBS. Who do they think goes to these things investors?
I totally agree. There is nothing more boring than listening to a
sales droid trying to sell electronic components. Besides that, the
components you want to use aren't available -yet-. Its much more
efficient to look in a Farnell catalogue and pick the most suitable
component from there. If Farnell (or a similar company) is stocking
it, it must be a useful component to many designers.
