Is a TV supposed to sizzle after its off?

Hi all,

I got an RCA 27" television for Christmas. The one thing I am concerned
with however, is that after the TV is off, it continues to make a sizzling
noise inside for ever! Even the first time I plugged it in the noise
started up, and it doesn't stop. I'm not sure if new TVs all do this or if
its a defect, as my last TV was roughly ten years old. If any experts out
there could help me out and let me know what this might be, I'd greatly
appreciate it. Thanks!

Sounds like the static from the screen being discharged in a controlled
manner. My 32" Grundig is the same but it only lasts around 2 mins, starts
quite loud then gets quieter, till approx 2 mins when there is no sound.

On some sets, after it is switched off, you will hear a static discharge for
a few seconds. Some sets will last longer.

If you put the power on, and there is a continuous sizzling noise, I would
have it checked. Since the set is new there should be a warranty on it.
During the warranty is the time to make sure that there are no problems with
the set.

Most sets now have high frequency power supplies that run
all the time. When you push the "power" button it doesn't
really turn off, but goes into "standby" mode where high
voltage, scan, and sound are shut down. The sound you hear
is probably something vibrating because of its changing
magnetic field. Could be a loose core in the transformer,
a ferrite bead that didn't get glued in place, etc. Some
chassis have been notorious and have had supression kits
issued. It most likely won't affect reliability, but the
set really isn't supposed to do that, so it's up to you
whether you put up with it.

Well, if you are concerned about this, then take the TV set back to the place
of purchase for an exchange. See if they can allow an exchange for a better
brand, though. RCA is definitely a brand that's lost it's touch rather badly.

hmm.. I was actually thinking of purchasing a 32" RCA tv because it has the
guide plus feature. Otherwise I'd go for the Panasonic or Toshiba. Are there
any other brands that offer the guide plus?

Thanks
