.... to fill the gap left by American troops shortly to be "kicking

A token force of 750 soldiers from the Black Watch regiment will be
moved from the south of the country to cover for the Americans'
absence in the central sector. Geoff Hoon intimated that the British
Government had aceeded to the Americans' request for back-up since as
to refuse to do so on the eve of the US elections would be seen as a
snub to George Bush at a critical time.

Right- Bush wants more British casualties in the news to bolster his
"coalition" propaganda- and moving your troops into central Iraq will do
the trick. This is all about "suffering casualties"- Bush wants to be
able to show that the UK is standing "shoulder to shoulder" with the US
in so far as providing morgue counts. The US has no legitimate tactical
need for 650 troops- that is a total fabrication.
