Can anyone help me to find a site explaining how these devices work? I
want to fix a 20 - year old Akai stereo which works fine but the
remote has recently failed. I suspect the LED but naturally want to
know what I'm doing before I heat up the soldering iron. I'd be most
grateful for any help.

Point the remote control at a video camera and activate the buttons. Most
video cameras are quite sensitive to near infrared so you will see a bright
spot in the camera viewfinder if the remote is transmitting

This will indicate whether the fault is in the TX or RX...
