Inverter replacement for off-brand laptop: Chembook

The LCD backlight is out, but the LCD itself is working (I can see its
image under bright light). There is only a very low voltage at the
output of the inverter (about 25 volts ac), even when disconnected from
the tube. There is 14.8 VDC coming into the inverter. It seems
reasonable the inverter has the problem (INN SUN 5313S-02 Rev:03).
Anyone know where I can get one? -- used but working would be fine. But
I have another idea: What if I don't use an exact replacement? The LED
setup may not match, but this is an old model and I could live without
that. Anyone tried this kind of a substitution? There is a fairly wide
range on the fluorescent tube specs (Turn on voltage, operating voltage)
and of course I have no info on what this one wants to see. If I error
on the low side, how critical is this? Where could I get an inverter to try?

You would need the original part to properly service the machine. You can
try to see if you can sub the lamps and inverter together, to make them
mechanically fit.

The best solution would be to send the unit to the manufacture and let them
fix it for you since they will not sell the parts.

Did a very quick search and came up with this web site:

http://laptops.home.att.net/Laptop-LCD-inverters-ref.htm

Never used them before, but they appear to sell the INN Sun inverters and
even if the specific one you need is not listed, you could contact them to
see if they can get it or if the one they do list would be a suitable
replacement. BTW, I agree it appears to be a bad inverter and would be much
cheaper if you can find the part to do this yourself since the manufacturer
would likely charge you more than the value of the laptop to replace the LCD
assembly.

Good luck. And if they can't help you, continue to use the available
Internet search engines. In my case, for a HP, I ultimately found my Ambit
inverter for about $50.
