Hi,

I was wondering if anyone has an Intel part number FV80503233 SL27S which is
a Pentium 233 MMX CPU in a socket 7 configuration that they would like to
sell or exchange for something else?

I had this mental flash - A picture of all those Steptoe types, with
mittened hands, grasping onto a mixture of ancient CPU's in the expectation
that they will become rare and valuable. Pigs Ar** !!! they will. Its only
sand with some value added. This particular chip will be on it's third
owner. It was mailed to me, from London, as a gift about 5 yrs ago. Goes
around, comes around.
I shall confirm the mailing right after it's done.

Thanks for that, I'm trying to ressurect a Quantum Snap server I bought on
e-bay. The previous owner assured me it was working OK however he only ever
used it in an air-conditioned computer room and when I pulled it apart the
CPU fan wasn't working and the CPU was getting very hot quickly.

It looked like the temperature sensor or motor control wasn't working so I
put the fan on the 12V rail and while it runs cool now it still locks up and
corrupts data after it's been running a while so I'm hoping a fried CPU is
the problem. I'll let you know how I get on.

I think you may well be right. They do run hot without a fan.
As a useful precaution for the future, you may want to check on exactly what
is coming out of the PSU. The only time I ever had corrupted data was with
an old PSU I pressed into use. Big mistake. It took me some months of
chasing my tail before I connected effect and probable cause. Part of life's
rich fabric? No. It was a huge time waster.

For want of something more suitable, I have wrapped the CPU in al. foil.
That should protect it from all but a direct lightning strike.

Hi Bill,

Thanks for sending the CPU, it arrived on Wednesday. Unfortunately it hasn't
fixed the problem and it corrupted the file structure again after about
eight hours of operation. This time I thought to leave it powered up after
the problem and tried a format again followed by copying of some data and it
failed almost straight away, so it still looks like a heat related problem
somewhere else.

When I'm in the mood again I might try running over the solder joints in
case there is a dry joint somewhere.

Well it is nice to eliminate the CPU for these jobs. Happy hunting. Keep the
CPU as a future spare/asset.

I know you will have switched the PSU by now, so you have some real trouble
shooting ahead.
