Looking for a newsgroups on computer clustering, especially windows
based.(NT, 2000 etc...)
I've tried the internet and can only find info on Beowulf which I'm
not interested in as I don't want to change platforms.
Can anyone point me in the right direction, either a newgroup or an
current site on clustering on windows based systems?
I realise it's abit off topic but was sure someone here would know
about it.
Thanks in advance.

If you can't find something specific, wouldn't it have made more
sense to pick at random a newsgroup related to computers at least?

I thought most clustering was going on under Linux, so that's a hint.
Though asking in a Linux newsgroup but saying you want to stay with
Microsoft may not prompt much replies.

But there are hierarchies and hierarchies of computer newsgroups,
just waiting for questions.

Or wait until you get replies from when you did post in a computer
related newsgroup.

However it is something of a electronics issue as it does deal
electronics components and I haven't met too many tweeks who weren't
into the nuts and bolts of computer modifycation and that's what
clustering essentially is.
Some even go so far as to do "Bonding" where they wire the computers
together at the buses.(I'd seen one several years ago that took up an
entire room, about a dozen P133's all with their tops off and ribbon
cable run in parrallel from on to the other. It did service as a
server for a friends online geodetic sattelite map service.)
As for the Linux group they didn't offer any advice but to dump
windows and switch to linux, no secret they pathologically hate
Windows, I'm no great fan myself but have my entire business set up on
it.
And if your familiar with Windows later operating systems you's know
that they are so riddled with copyright protection features never mind
the bugs they already have that it makes running any kind of DVD
burners a hit or miss proposition.(Friend of mine with an off the
shelf video editing station running XP can't get his burner to run
about half the time.)
I hear 2003 is even worse.
And most of my people like 2000 as do I, it's far more reliable than
XP.
I do see other computer related questions in this group, most are
actually software related vs. hardware repair.

Use Microsoft's news server (news.microsoft.com if I remember
correctly) and sign onto the Server 2K / Server 2K3 newsgroups.

NT never officially supported clustering - that was brought in with
the Datacenter Edition of 2K server.

Can anyone point me in the right direction, either a newgroup or an

Mmm .. www.microsoft.com/windows ? Go to Server 2003?

Hello! And thanks for the reply.
Unfortunately I don't deal with Microsoft.
They only force-feed you their latest OS and keep you chained to
having to come back to them for support($$$$$) and fixes(more$$$$)

The whole idea of clustering old hardware is to free oneself from
having to constantly upgrade(expensive!) and always being at the mercy
of corporations like Microsoft.
To that end Microsoft actually sees most of the clustering community
as a threat.
Clustering is all about 0$ outlay, something that's not going to
happen when dealing with Bill.
I did read a couple of papers where clustering was done with NT 4.0
and win2kpro. They even used 486DX4's.
One student group used P166's and lower Pentiums and attained some
pretty astounding rendering speeds.
That's what I'm after.
I know the information is out there somewhere just gotta find it.
Thanks again tho'.

A quick check on my news server shows SEVEN
newsgroups with the word "clustering" in their names.

Either you didn't look, or you have a particularly lousy
news service.

it does deal electronics components and I haven't

The whole point of current grass-roots clustering
activity is that they DO NOT use any special hard-
ware. They use completely ordinary computers,
networking, disks, etc etc. with special software to
share the computing task across many boxes.
