Hi,

I want to be able to interface the laser, sled, tracking and focus of a CD
Rom I have pulled apart. Does anyone know what inputs the laser takes,
analogue/digital, and the maximum volatge/current for the focus and tracking
coils, maotor of the sled and the laser.

Thankyou

Why don't you get another one and this time pay attention BEFORE
you take it apart??

Because I want to interface it with a PIC and I was just wanting to know if
anyone knew what voltages it runs at, as I couldn't tell because it is hard
to trace the connections back if you don't know what the ICs do.

I can put it back together, it's not like a hit it with a hammer.

The S/W involved in getting the laser to follow the track on the CD must be
horribly complex. You probably need to know all sorts of wacky parameters
like the inertia of the sled - My guess is that if you don't work for a
drive manufacturer or have a source of inside information it won't be
possible. Drive manufacturers have big teams of people to do this stuff.

Discovering the interface data may almost be impossible, because many CD ROM
drive manufacturers use custom VLSI chips.

My suggestion is, that if you have it intact, just test the voltages
and currents being supplied to it, and control them with your own
inputs by cutting a few traces and tapping in your own controls;
yields minimal circuit hijacking and your work is done!

The actuator voltages are available, as is the head output.
That's what he wants.

Yeah, thanks.

I found some other stuff for it aswell. Seems they are really sensitive and
i might have to just buy a discrete laser for what I want to do.

Thanks anyway.

Can you tell us to what end you want to do with this. The laser is very low
power and is infrared so you wont be able to see it like a laser pointer.
Curious..
