In-circuit battery charger

I have a circuit that uses 1.5 volts (back up),
provided I have a rechargeable battery... what other things do I need to
consider if I wanted a in-circuit recharger circuit?
anyone know or have any suggestions for schematics?
what I have so far is....
1) The battery needs to be connected to a source at a higher potential like
2 V (at all times?? or should there be a trigger that will let in 2 V only
after battery charge has dropped by a certain amount?)
Thanks

Chemistry of the battery (alkaline, ...).
How fast do you want it recharged, minutes or days.
How much are you willing to trade battery life for decreased complexity.
Might it be easier just to stick a bigger 1.5V cell in.
