I'm looking for a review of Doulos VHDL courses

I'm considering taking the Doulos Comprehensive (5 day) VHDL course
(in the USA), and I'd like to hear from anyone who has taken the
course. Was it a good course, did the instructor know the subject,
etc. I will be paying for this out of my own pocket (I'm unemployed),
so I want to make sure that I spend my money wisely.

Hi Dave,

I can't comment on the VHDL course but I have been on 4 other Doulos courses and
I can honestly say they were absolutely brilliant. These guys really know their
subject. Look at who is the language guru in this and the Verilog newsgroup
(hint he works for Doulos), similarly if you read the SystemC mailing list
something like 80% of all the questions are answers by just 2 employees from
Doulos. I am not saying that everybody at Doulos is brilliant but in the past 8
years I haven't met a single one (in the UK) that didn't know his subject. The
other thing I like about these guys is that they also do consultancy so their
teaching material is not just academic.

I know these course are not cheap (I didn't pay for them) but in my book they
are definitely worth it. Perhaps they are willing to give you a discount given
you are unemployed?

Thanks for the response, Hans. In the past, I've taken some company
paid 5-day courses (not taught by Doulos), that were a waste of my
time and my employer's money. I feel better knowing that the Doulos
courses that you took, were good. I do know basic VHDL, but being
self-taught, there are "holes", or "gaps" in what I know. And
sometimes I don't realize that I don't know something. And, yes I
always learn a lot from Jonathan Bromley's (of Doulos,Inc)
discussions, even when some of the discussions were over my head -
that shows me another piece of VHDL that I knew nothing about. So I
hope that the course will give me a better overview of VHDL and fill
in some of my knowledge "holes/gaps". And finally, I hope that taking
taking the course will look good on my resume, too.

I spoke to two very nice people from Doulos (Emma & Doug) who really
went out of their way to get me the VHDL training course that I could
afford. They gave me discount on the full 5-day course. Without the
generosity of Doulos, I would not have been able to afford to take the
course. Thanks again, Emma & Doug. Now I'm really looking forward to
taking the course!
