Does anyone know of a source for simple reed switches? Not the kind
used in burglar alarm systems, but just the reed switches
themselves.

What do you think the difference is between the reed switches used in
burglar alarm systems and "just the reed switches themselves"?

FYI, back in the day, they used to sell reed switches that weren't

FYI, nowadays "they" still do.

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&q=reed+switch

will get you almost 400,000 hits.

Then, of course, there's Digi-Key, Mouser, Allied, Newark/Farnell,
Arrow...
