Well Nick,
There are many places to start.
Do a Google for ARRL, it will keep you busy.

If you want to build stuff with modern emphasis, then buy from the
ARRL who are a Ham Radio outfit.

If you want to learn theory or about history, then buy from the RSCB
who are a firm of book publishers orientated towards CB Radio.

Hmm... Doing RF circuit design.. It depends what kind of level
you would like to involve. You could just use ICs available to
make your system. In that case, you should just spend some
time on the datasheet of those chips directly. If you are
interested in the analog circuit part, you probably need to
start from some basic theory. Suggest two links to browse
before you buy any books:

http://www.ScienceOxygen.com/electrical.html
http://www.ScienceOxygen.com/gadget.html

It might not help directly. But at least, some topics are listed
so that you can decide where you want to start.
