Hi Gang,
My trusty, crusty HP LaserJet IIP is starting to show its age. One side
of each printed page is showing a grey haze over the image. Its slowly
getting worse. Probably not worth fooling with, but this has been a great
printer and I'd like to try to repair it before sending it to the dump.

Anyone here have any suggestions? I don't mind digging into it
(nothing to loose!).

bookmarked a post about it, but I can't find it, and I can't remember
what I was searching for when I found the post. My 4P had a low
page count when I bought it last May, so it's in good shape and I
haven't come across any problem (other than the cartridge was near
it's end when I bought the thing for fifteen dollars).

Have you checked the FAQ, http://www.repairfaq.org ? There is some
stuff about laser printers in general, and HP laserjets in particular,
and there might be something that matches your problem.

1. The label on top of the toner cartridge is peeling and blocking
the laser light. Remove the cartridge and look for a slot along the
roof of the cavity from where it was extracted. Remove pieces of
paper, labels, and debris blocking the slot.

2. You've got dust, dirt, filth, cigarette smoke, or condensed
moisture inside the laser scanner assembly. It's not impossible to
tear it apart and clean the assembly. However, it is tedious. Remove
the cover, unscrew everything so that you can access what's under all
the electronics and sheet metal. You'll eventually come to a black
plastic box. Don't remove it. Remove the one screw holding the cover
in place and unsnap the catches holding the cover. Using a cotten
cloth, CAREFULLY clean the lenses. Do not touch the front surface
mirrors on the rotating scanner assembly. Re-assemble. Pray.

I happen to have a few HPIIp printers ripped apart in the office and
can supply photographs if desperate. However, I would take photos so
the you remember where the sheet metal and screws went.
