Bought a second hand HP Jornada 680 online. Thing just freezes after
calibrating the touch screen. HP's Customer Service says they'll
charge $250+ to replace it. Is there any chance that I can undertake
repair myself or even send it in somewhere who would fix it (not HP)?

I've talked to their technical support, they couldnt help fix it - I
tried everything they recommended. They suggested that I get it
replaced. Customer service suggested I throw it away (or throw away
the $250) ... :)

Is this a common problem to PDAs - anyone have success in fixing this
kind of problem on a similar model?

When servicing these, the service techs replace boards as modules.
Component level service is very complex and time consuming for even the
most experienced techs. Also, the service schematics and the detailed
engineering data would be necessary. You would also require the proper
test equipment to verify readings, and troubleshoot the circuits
involved. You would also require a solid base knowledge in how these
circuits work.

After the finding the fault, if it is a proprietary part that is
involved, HP will not sell it.

The only thing you can do yourself is check or broken connections and
loose connectors, cold solder connections on the board (if visible), and
if there is anything visually broken.

When you think about the labour and facilities alone that are involved
to troubleshoot these sets at the component level, you will see why they
change only the complete boards in many of the cases.

I found that most of these monitors and electronic equipment sold used,
have some types of problems. When equipment is still in good working
condition, the users will rarely sell it off.

Is the device really frozen or is it only a faulty display? I have had
this problem twice with my 680 (display background light on but nothing
on the screen).
The first time it was the display connector on the mainboard (easy to
disassemble). The second time it was the connector on the display itself
(not so easy to disassemble - now my 680 looks like something strange *ggg*)

The fault occured together with a total loss of all memory. Maybe the
loss of the display connection leads to a total reset.

All I needed was a calm hand and a torx screwdriver.

Good luck and have a software backup by hand!
