HP 1100 laser Printer -- prints horrible characters

I have an PH laser printer which prints horrible characters even
though it has been fed with an intelligible text. I have cheked the
drivers,(differnt drivers), tried it on a different computer but still
the problem persist. The same problem when I print from DOS. I need
help please. THANKS.

I am assuming the connector is parallel and not USB
The connector cable is faulty or not plugged in correctly. the result is
that some data is always received as zero even when the computer is sending
binary 1s

What do you mean exactly by " Prints horrible characters" ?
Do you mean that instead of printing the alphabets, it actually prints
different characters?

Do you mean that some of the characters are impossible to read because of
fading or something like that?
Could you scan a printout and incorporate it in this article?

Could you scan a printout and incorporate it in this article?

Please don't ask that way. That would mean to attach a binary and it is not
small trouble for the NG. Got to keep the bandwidth to reasonable levels. Much
better to upload to the space your ISP gives you and post a link in the
message. I guess we've already been thrown off one server because of that.

The HP 1100 is paralell, so if you use the SAME cable on each PC you try it on,
it is suspect. Most likely we're talking about one pin not making connection.
The very first thing to do is try another cable (if you did, sorry I missed
that).

If the problem is not the cable, it'll be in the board in the HP, not a
mechanical part. You said it prints, that means that system control is working,
the rollers, the drum, the heater, all of it is working. Leaves but one thing,
the decoder circuitry.

Fixing that is <u>FORGET IT</u>. Better to find a used board. These things had
more then their share of paper jams, so I'm told, so you might be able to get
one cheap if someone decided to FUBAR one up because he got pissd off.

These things are 4 years old now and you're getting close to the point where
you'll give somebody $20 and plug the board in and it will work. I own an 1100+
and I kinda like it. Not a bad printer at all, so don't throw it out.

Certainly possible. Does the internal test page print correctly? My manual says
'To print a Self Test Page, press the Go key when the printer is in a ready state'.

A defective parallel, or a parallel cable that is not seated correctly
can cause the characters to not be printed properly. The way that the
data is read, can offset the way the fonts and control characters are
addressed. Other than that, it can be a faulty board in the printer
itself, thus not addressing the print head properly.

Sometimes the same description could apply to a defective or old cartridge
and/or bad connections to it.

I have the multi-function version of this machine--two of them in fact. The

bios on both of mine were corrupted. Fortunately on the 3200m (mine), the
bios is flashable, or replacable as a SIM in the rear of the machine.
Unfortunately for me, the flash process failed and I had to get new SIM's.
The good news was that for a single $25 support call to Hp, they sent me two
new SIM's NextDay Air--free of further charge.

While that might not be the OP's problem, it's one to consider.

BTW, Hp maintains a tech forum, which is where I found out that my units had
this common problem. I can't find it in my 'favorites' right now, but it
could be googled.

Thanks a lot everybody. I have checked and tried all ya solutions
but the problem is still there.
I have tried a different cable but that did not help. Also I will
like to state that it prints the test page alright.
the characters that are prited are readerble but it's full of "o"
and meaningless words even though the input is meaningful and
readable.
Thanks to all and more grease to ya elbows.

Make sure that the printer type is correct and the drivers are current
vintage (from HP's web site). If these look good, then try printing to the
suspected bad printer from another computer to validate it's not a software
problem. If the cable is good and the test page prints properly, then I'd
place my money on a bad/corrupted driver or application problem.

but the problem is still there.
