How to use Tek 465B 'scope ?

I just recieved a 465B Tektronix oscilloscope.
It was an ebay purchase and came without manuals. I have ordered a
book and videotape package that teaches one how to use an
oscilloscope. I also have a manual for a similar unit that was
provided by Spehro Pefhany. The 'scope came with one probe which has
two leads. It appears to have one lead connected to ground. When I
touch the red lead and make certain adjustments the screen shows a
wave that I assume is from the 60 cycle ac in the shop. It is not a
pure sine wave though. It has regular defects or spikes in the wave
form. Am I seeing ac? And what else can the probe be used for so I can
play while waiting for the book? And last question for now, which
probes should I get for this thing? I will be using it in a machine
shop with CNC equipment mostly. So it will be used to measure encoder
pulses, voltages, phases, etc..

For starters, hook the probe to the little (rectangular) wire loop at the
bottom of the scope's front panel, and play with the controls to see what
they do.

Hi, Eric. First, download the Tektronix tutorial "XYZs of Oscilloscopes",
which is available from their website

http://www.tektronix.com/

That will answer a lot of your basic questions about oscilloscopes.

For non-critical shop-type applications, just about any scope probe will do the
job. Tektronix makes a line of passive replacement probes for their scopes,
which I would recommend for their durability and quality. They are a little
pricier than generic replacement probes, though. The 1X probe is the P6101B,
and the 10X probe is the P6105A. They're both useful.

Try to stay away from generic replacement probes -- they can vary widely in
quality, and tend to break or go intermittent frequently.

If you feel you have to go the generic route, and you only have enough for one
probe, get one of the X1/X10 switchable ones. Be sure to get one with a
trimmer to match the probe to the scope.

so, if you already know that reading the original scope manual would
be helpful:

Free download from bama.sbc.edu

Read the instructions "how to download" and go to the Tektronix
section. Complete 465B service manual: contains all instruction,
theory of operation, schematics -- that's it. You ned the free djvu
browser - also explained in
"how to download".

Thanks to everyone who replied. I've been fooling around with the

thing and haven't broken it yet. I did try hooking the probe to the
loop at the bottom and nothing happens. I hope it's not broken. The
scope I mean. I also connected the probe to a speaker and that gets
results. Speaking at it makes the line squiggle. It looks like the
damped sine wave in the TEK tutorial.
