how to find equivalent transistor

Hi,

I need to replace a 8050 transistor.
I found the data sheet on the web but no source to buy one.
(NPN TO92 IC 800mA 30V switching/audio, drives a siren pieco)
What's a proper way to find an equivalent transistor that's actually available?

These are just "jelly bean" general purpose transistors:

A BC337A looks like it might substitute for it:
http://www.datasheetarchive.com/pdf-datasheets/Datasheets-12/DSA-228097.pdf

Just be careful of the pinout. One is EBC, the other is CBE.

You are right.

When data sheets where still in books I used to have a book with tables that
showed equivalent devices by different manufacturers. I was hoping that the web
has something like this to offer.
In this case hFE is important. The driving circuit is just 2*4069 inverters in
parallel over 100 Ohms. The load is an unknown transformer.

The 8050 is a fairly good spec for a TO92 device, if a TO126 part will fit
the available space it would be much easier to find a device that meets or
exceeds the most important parameters.

Blew up after 20 seconds
Was worth a try for $0.35

Found a good one in TO92, 2STX1360.

Vce sat 150mV typ @ 2A.
Don't know where to get it, apart from Digikey...
There would be space for a larger package though, any suggestions?
Already feeling a bit silly trying to fix the thing;-(

Found a good one in TO92, 2STX1360.

One thing to watch is the pin-out, the datasheet I found for the 8050
(SS8050) shows centre pin base, the ST part and also the TO126 option I
suggested both have centre pin collector, The TO92 or TO92L would be easier
to bend the pins to fit than a TO126 but if you're never going to have to
change the transistor again it might be worth cutting and patching the
tracks.

Using some random NPNs from my junk box produced a lot of dead bodies though
